The Legacy Lives in the Forest
Founded by Mother and Daughter
Hawaiian Rainforest Naturals was founded by Joy Johnson and her daughter, Melia Goodenow. They trained directly under Kahuna Lapaʻau Morrnah Nālamakū Simeona and the beloved Papa Henry Auwae .
Their teachers showed them how to approach the plants with respect—to pray before gathering, ask permission, take only what was needed, and give thanks. Those teachings became part of the foundation of Hawaiian Rainforest Naturals and continue to guide our work today.

The Sacred Prayer of the Flowers
Letting the Forest Lead the Way
We don't just pick flowers. We listen. Before we gather, we slow down, pray, and ask permission. We wait for the response. We pay attention to the plants, the weather, and the time of day, and the feelings in our na'au. If a flower isn't ready and willing, we don't pick, we ask every flower before picking. These simple practices have been part of our work for decades.

Essences vs. Essential Oils
Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts known for their natural aroma. Flower essences are different. They are scentless, water-based preparations made from flowers. Rather than capturing a plant's fragrance, flower essences capture the living vibration of the flower's energy. These were traditionally used as emotional remedies to uplift in times of sorrow or shift perspectives in times of confusion or anger.

No Shortcuts, Just Care
We make our flower essences in small batches, using the flowers we carefully gather here in Hawaiʻi. We don't add synthetic fragrances or unnecessary fillers. From gathering the flowers to preparing and bottling each essence, we take our time and follow the practices we've been taught.
For us, quality means knowing where the flowers come from, how they were gathered, and how each batch was prepared and bottled. That attention to detail is part of what has guided Hawaiian Rainforest Naturals for more than 30 years.

Every bottle is made here on Hawaiʻi Island. A land of scared energy, active volcanos, wild forests and an ancient culture. This culture lived in PONO - in harmony with nature, nature as friend, gods and as the source of life. We gather flowers from wild places to capture this special energy. We diligently follow the teachings that have guided our work for more than 30 years.
The land gives us so much. Our responsibility is to care for it, listen to it and follow the guidance given. Within everiy bottle of our flower essences is layers upon layers of permissions granted. From the heavens to the earth, we ask that our flower essences be blessed and bless people all over the world. and....They do!
This land is our home, and we are grateful for all it gives. Every essence is made with aloha and reverence for the rainforest, the plants, the land, this energy and the traditions that guide us.
